SINGERS are like PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, a continued regimen of physical, mental and fundamental training is important to the growth and success of their vocal abilities.
HERE’S A BREAKDOWN OF MY PHILOSOPHIES, VALUES AND CREATIVE APPROACH TO THE VOCAL PRODUCTION PROCESS…
TECHNIQUE
Fundamentally approaching the mechanics of singing provides a strong base for every artist’s ability to sing freely and with confidence.
A good vocal trainer implements a healthy dose of exercises and applicable concepts to help improve a singer’s approach to both the studio and live performances.
CONTROL
The root of singing with flexibility and control lies heavily on the breath. When singers have complete control of their breath support, they open the door to a wide range of skills.
Through a series of exercises, a vocal trainer improves a singer’s ability to take in maximum amount of breath and can support it with the diaphragm.
RANGE
The size of a singer’s vocal folds are individually unique. Shorter vocal folds have a higher range while longer ones produce lower tones.
Regardless of where a singer’s voice sits naturally, the vocal folds are a muscle that can be stretched to increase the range both high and low for a singer.
FLUIDITY
There are three sections to navigate for every vocalist. Referred to as the head voice/falsetto (for men), chest voice and below. Although their timbre is inherently different sounding, the goal is to create one naturally fluid voice that can easily be accessed at any given time.
Fluidity can also be applied to vocal runs. Applying linear vocal calisthenic movements allow the singer to control fast passes of notes with ease.
MENTALITY
Half of singing with freedom and increasing the range is mental. The mind often restricts us from pushing perceived physical boundaries.
With a good physical base and some mental imagery to help guide technique, a vocal trainer can help singers break boundaries to better improve performance and melodic range.
CREATIVITY
TONE
Vocal tone shaping contributes to a singer’s natural sound as well as the music they do as an artist. Through a mixture of breath and vocal placement, a trainer helps guide the singer’s approach to uphold a consistent and applicable sound to their music.
PERFORMANCE
Diving into the context of a song and pulling out the emotional feels is the difference between just singing and performing. Regardless of tempo or style, it’s all in the confidence, delivery and vocal freedom.
MUSICALITY
EAR TRAINING
Developing an acute ear for melody and harmony is essential to both melodic development in songwriting as well as stacking harmonies both in the studio and live on stage.
Applying the developed technical skills above allows for a freedom and flexibility that translates to more musicality!
